Great is HIS Faithfulness
22 Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed,
for his compassions never fail.
23 They are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
24 I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion;
therefore I will wait for him.”
Lamentations 3:22-24 (NIV)
The book of Lamentations isn’t generally known for its cheerfulness but hidden in this book are the great words that we have come to love, partly due to the words being put into song. DO you remember the old chorus, The Steadfast Love of the Lord Never Ceases? It goes on to say, “His mercies never come to an end. They are new every morning, new every morning. Great is thy faithfulness, O Lord, great is thy faithfulness.” Whilst this is certainly a good song, I was reminded yesterday during our church service of one of my all-time favorite hymns, Great Is Thy Faithfulness. I absolutely LOVE this hymn. As you read the words again and maybe sing them, cling to that reality. Revel in the fact that God’s faithfulness is truly great. The battle has already been won and Jesus is the one who has won the victory.

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth, |
This great hymn will soon be celebrating its centenary. It was written by Thomas Chisholm in 1923. It was not written due to a dramatic event in his life but his health was unstable. Due to his health issues, Thomas could only work when he was well so had various jobs. Lamentations 3 really spoke to him as he realized how faithful God was/is.
Nearly 100 years later, how many of us can testify to God’s faithfulness? We all walk different paths but yet the words of scripture and this hymn are still more than relevant today. Tying in with Hebrews 13:8 from last week’s post our God is not only an awesome God but he NEVER changes and His faithfulness is fresh and new to us EVERY day if we claim it.
